Shaping Futures wants to ensure that activities delivered are informed by evidence, pulling from relevant research and every activity has a measurable outcome. This report will support Shaping Futures in this aim by considering data that has previously been used, data that is less commonly used, and to compare the Liverpool City Region’s data in a wider context.
Following on from our 2021 report, this report covers the demographics of the Liverpool City Region including how they compare both nationally, regionally and between boroughs, and the multifaceted nature of disadvantage that exists within our combined authority with a particular focus on secondary, further and higher education.

This report is an investigation into the outreach needs of learners studying in colleges in the Liverpool City Region. Published research on adult learners often discusses particularly local issues they are facing – with increased responsibility than the typical young learner, adults are more likely to face challenges with transport, finding time to study, and balancing finance as well as education.
This research aims to understand whether the issues faced by adults in the Liverpool City Region are the same as those reported in the research, and therefore whether outreach needs to be tailored to the specific needs in the region.

As part of the Shaping Futures Parental Engagement Working Group, Liverpool John Moores University carried out a questionnaire to identify whether the parents/carers of KS3, KS4 and KS5 students feel supported with Higher Education, and whether existing provision needs to be enhanced or additional provisions provided.
