Early in February 2021 Shannen delivered Student Finance Sessions to Y13’s at Cardinal Heenan Sixth Form. These sessions were delivered virtually via Microsoft Teams. Due to schools being closed and the flexibility that online delivery allows, the session was delivered in 2 parts on consecutive weeks during the learners form time.

In October 2020 Shannen (Higher Education Progression Advisor) delivered virtual resilience sessions to Y13’s at Calderstones via Microsoft Teams. Shannen met with her contact at Calderstones who expressed concern about learners mental health having experienced major disruption and school closures due to t he Covid-19 pandemic.

Working alongside our partner institutions, Shaping Futures identified the need in our area to provide specialist outreach support for professionals working with learners who have additional needs. During our research we spoke with teachers and SENCo’s to identify gaps in their knowledge, plus current university students with disabilities who shared their own experiences of transitioning to university, and the support they wished they had.

Through our work with schools, colleges, and students, we recognise how many young people in our region aspire to work in healthcare. Ensuring our young people can achieve these aspirations is vital for the broader success of our region, as healthcare is one of the biggest economic sectors in the Liverpool City Region.

In May 2021 Shaping Futures launched The Pay Index in the Liverpool City Region, in partnership with the Liverpool City Region Careers Hub. The online platform, available to students in Year 9 and above, as well as teachers and parents/carers, provided a valuable source of Labour Market Information.

At Shaping Futures we pride ourselves on being able to offer tailored careers information, advice and guidance to target ward learners in our priority schools. This offer is popular since we are able to meet Gatsby Benchmarks 3 and 8 during the meeting, helping schools and colleges to fulfil their careers programme.

Higher Education can provide an incredible opportunity for adult learners to access a new career, upskill in their current career, increase their earning potential or pursue interests they may not have previously had the chance to. The decision to pursue Further or Higher Education can be difficult for adult learners dealing with a variety of barriers influencing their decision, including finances, caring responsibilities, work commitments and anxieties around confidence in their ability to study.
Throughout her time at school Lily received a wide range of support from Shaping Futures, from campus visits, 1-2-1s and taking part in our Through the Eyes of Girls project. This sustained outreach project targeted young women from local schools, like Lily, co-created with students using focus groups to provide students with increased knowledge of university and their options, improving their skills and supporting them into HE.
