Service Children

We understand that Service Children, or students from military families, might need additional, specialised support when making their education journey and in their progression to Further and Higher Education. We aim to support students from military families through a tailored package of support provided by our core team, and by contributing to research to improve understanding of the support you might need. Currently, we contribute to the SCiP Alliance Uni Connect FE Research Project.

On this page you’ll find useful links, as well as details of our support offer, but if you need more information, or can’t find what you’re looking for, please get in touch with us.

Shaping Futures Support for Service Children

Shaping Futures provides a comprehensive support off for Service Children, which takes into account individual students’ circumstances, aspirations and individual needs. All Service Children can receive 1-2-1 support sessions with a Shaping Futures Higher Education Progression Advisor, focused on transitions, GCSE options, post-16 options, university applications, Student Finance and more. We are able to link Service Children in with our partner institutions to access the appropriate support, including bespoke campus visits for which we would provide transport.

Although the majority of our support is targeted at students directly, we are also happy to support parents and carers with any queries, including understanding the options and support available for their young people.

We encourage teachers and school staff to get in touch with us if they have needs related to supporting Service Children, as we are able to signpost to CPD opportunities, resources such as the Thriving Lives Toolkit as well as provide tailored information, advice and guidance.

We continue to work closely with the Service Children’s Progression Alliance, and will adapt and expand our support as we identify relevant needs.
